What’s good, Seminyak?

Food

Our recent trip to Bali was both a work trip and team retreat. All of us worked hard and ate even harder. With our hectic schedules in Singapore, we rarely have the luxury of time to go cafe hopping altogether so we jumped at the chance in Bali! The Balinese cafe scene is bustling, especially in Seminyak. Near this little town are some of the most glorious beaches in Bali, many commercial establishments and ravishing villas are aplenty. Scroll down to see where we headed to!

Ah Zabenya! Entering this cafe was as if we had stepped foot into a jungle. What’s even better than the cafe’s tropical decor is it being home to Bali Boat Shed. No, literally. There is a shed, which stocks hippy and cool printed apparels amongst many other things. Back to the cafe – their food and drinks are exceptional. You can grab brunch at any time of day with their all day menu. Come evening and the cocktails started making their appearances on guests’ tables. I guess we weren’t the only ones who enjoyed an early drink.

Chachara means chatter in spanish, a very appropriate name for somewhere you can dine and chitchat with your friends. Also, what’s an evening with great company and good food but no pleasing music? Chachara takes its music selection really seriously, with a carefully curated selection that will appeal to guests of all ages. Now, the food — good ol’ Mediterranean choices. Tapas, tapas, tapas. The extensive tapas menu will leave you spoilt for choice, but sharing is caring (and you get to try more things). We also went for a traditional dry paella Paella Valenciana, crispy suckling pig Cochinillio and thinly sliced pork loin Smoked Lonzino. It came as a little surprise that we could get an authentic taste of Spain here in Bali.

P.s/ I wish everything was as easy as getting fat. Well, at least we worked it off with a game or two of table tennis.

What do you think of when you hear ‘circus’? Yes, bright and loud colours plaster the walls and decor of this cafe. One will find hues of sea green in every corner and we absolutely loved how photogenic this cafe was! We got ourselves a fix of 3 Taco Chicken and the Chilli Garlic Linguine with additional king prawns, both of which were wiped out in the blink of an eye. Notice, we also got a side of baby broccolis just to balance out our terrible diet the entire trip. It’s all about moderation!

My regular followers would know that I’m a fan of juices, organic or not. A true hidden gem, Remix & Co ticks off both checkboxes with its organic cold-pressed juices. You could even get them delivered straight to your villa! We dropped by the cafe and couldn’t resist the photo ops. The cafe uses local or organic produce and its homey brunch options left us feeling so satisfied. Their menu offers a mix between modern western and asian dishes. We’ve never had Dragon Fruit Pancakes, so this was our first pick! Other items we ordered were the Zucchini Soba Chao Mian, Nasi Goreng Tek Tek, and Omelette. Both were very quickly snapped up, it was that good (or perhaps we were just too hungry). The star that stole the show was definitely the Aglio Olio pasta. It’d be something we’d come back for over and over again.

ADDRESS: Da Maria, Jalan Petitenget No. 170, Badung, Bali

If you’re thinking of taking a vacation in Italy but it’s too far, hop around into Da Maria. The modern Italian restaurant exquisitely designed by Roman architects will transport you straight to the Amalfi Coast. With good ambience, there must be good food. Da Maria’s delectable food selection will leave you wanting second servings. Their pizzas are not the ones that typically get delivered to your doorstep. As simple as a pizza may be, the chefs put a lot of effort into the pizza dough and they are cooked in Naples inspired lava stone ovens. Two thumbs up for our Da Maria Pizza! I’ve also eaten at many Italian joints but a lot of them use ready made pasta noodles. The Pappardelle here is made in-house and topped with Braised Beef Shin Ragu. This was definitely one of the best italian meals I’ve had since my trip to Italy. Highly highly recommended.

Even if you haven’t been to Bali before, you must have heard of Sisterfields from a friend or a family member. The modern restaurant is one of the most popular food joints in Seminyak, with lines forming as soon as it opens. And nope, they do not take reservations so my suggestion is to head down early! Nevermind the queue, the instagram-worthy food and impeccable customer service will make you forget everything. We heard that their must-try is the Pulled Pork Charcoal Roll. No regrets, it is not a must-try for no reason. We also went for the Asian Chilli Crab and XO Pasta, because c’mon, how often do you find a combination of our local Singaporean dish and western pasta? Needless to say, it was everyone’s favourite! If you’re looking for a place that will not disappoint, look no further!

ADDRESS: Motel Mexicola, Jalan Kayujati 9X, Seminyak, Bali
OPENING HOURS: Daily, 11am-1am

I know what you’re thinking when you heard Motel Mexicola, but no, it isn’t a guest accommodation. The second part of its name is however true to itself. This quirky and boldly decorated restaurant serves up a mean Mexican meal – from guacamole to quesadillas, guests will enjoy the modern take on traditional Mexican food. The food is respectable but the vibes make this place such a great hangout location. If you’re not looking to eat there, you can slide up the bar for a drink or two and enjoy the live music! Altogether, the mismatched and funky printed furniture and ambience makes the restaurant-bar a must go when you’re in Bali.

Here are our top 7 picks from Seminyak if you’re looking for places to eat at when you’re around the area! I’ll also be sharing more on exploring the other areas of Bali, so stay tuned! Subscribe to my mailing list if you haven’t to get first dibs on my upcoming blogposts!
