Mother’s Day is just around the corner and even though we don’t have the luxury of going out for a hearty brunch with our loved ones, who’s to say that we can’t celebrate in the comforts of our own home. This year, the unfortunate circumstances might just turn out to have a silver lining. In this period of social distancing, we finally have the chance to focus on the most valuable gift of all – time.
And if you happen to live separately, don’t fret, you can still bridge the distance and spend quality time over delivery services and FaceTime.
If you are fortunate enough to live in the same home, start off Mother’s Day with a special breakfast in bed. Even something as simple as kaya toast with soft boiled eggs can perk up your mother’s morning. Maybe even try to wake up earlier in the morning to get some morning chores done. Some vacuuming and cleaning here and there will do wonders for your home’s appearance. Mom will be in for a pleasant surprise when she sees that the laundry is done and not even a crumb in sight.
Alternatively, give Mom a morning text message. That way, she’ll wake up to a heartwarming message and a smile on her face.
Next, after her splendid breakfast in bed, show that you care by giving some TLC to Mom’s hard-working hands and feet. A massage will do wonders for her body and help her feel energised for the rest of the day you have planned for her. Put on her favourite soap drama as you knead away the knots in her shoulders and arms and she’ll be on cloud nine in no time.
Or spoil Mom with a gift voucher from her favourite spa. You’ll support the spa during this difficult time and your mom will have a gift to enjoy by the time everything gets better.
In place of casual brunch at your mother’s favourite place or a sophisticated afternoon tea, bring the yummy treats home to enjoy. Brew a nice pot of coffee or tea to share. I personally enjoy the Nespresso coffee capsules for a fuss-free barista-quality beverage but I’m eyeing this Cheng Tng inspired tea from Ette Tea!
What’s afternoon tea without some pastries and tidbits to munch on? Some favourites include Tiong Bahru Bakery’s Kouign Amann for a classic buttery pastry, Poh Cheu Kitchen’s Ang Ku Kueh for a traditional sweet, All The Batter’s Avocado Milk Balls for a healthier twist on a cream puff and The Marmalade Pantry’s exclusive Mother’s Day Tea Set.
These bakeries offer delivery services as well, so you can send your mother a care package of indulgent treats too!
At the same time, make use of your time together at home and try pulling out an old photo album. A few memorable photos can go a long way. Mom will be tickled to look back on her fondest memories with you, and perhaps maybe even share some funny stories along the way! If you’re sending Mom a care package of her favourite sweets, don’t miss this opportunity to reminisce with your mother as well! Why not collect a few photographs and put them together into a photo montage or even a Zoom background? That should make for a sentimental surprise.
Wine, Dine & Dessert
Cancelled dinner plans have never looked this good. Try your hand at some chef-worthy recipes and cook up a lavish spread for you and loved ones to enjoy. Dumplings from Crazy Rich Asians anyone? You can find Violet Oon’s recipe here. Or if you’re averse to the kitchen, Candlenut’s Peranakan menu brings a modern twist to home-favourites like Babi Buah Keluak, Ikan Assam Pedas and Beef Rib Rendang. Don’t forget to add a jar of their signature Sambal Belachan if you like a fiery kick to your food!
Alternatively, if Mom’s in the mood for something more western, Burnt Ends’ offerings of Lamb Chops, Wagyu Tenderloin and Garlic Butter King Crab will definitely not disappoint! They offer delivery islandwide, so you won’t even have to lift a finger (except to answer the door of course!).
Round off the evening with some wine or dessert and you’ve got yourself an amazing evening. All about Tiramisu delivers desserts that are to die for, a perfect complement to your wine of choice.
